How to dye black clothing
How to dye black or dark clothing using the discharge dye process Dying black clothing is a two step process. When dying a lighter colored item all you need to do is apply the dye according to the dye instructions. When you dye a dark colored item, you first need to remove the color from the clothing in order to dye the clothing. Dying black clothing is sometimes referred to as reverse or discharge dyeing. For the dying process to be successful, an item of clothing made from 100% cotton works best. You can dye black clothing by removing all or a portion of the dark color. Instructions
Step 1 Prepare the item of clothing for dying. Wash the article of clothing. If it is a new item, a rinse will suffice. Ring dry by hand or use a dryer. Set aside. Step 2 Prepare bleach solution. Mix equal parts of bleach and water sufficient to cover the clothing. Place damp fabric in solution ensuring it is completely immersed.Let sit for 1 hour or until you notice the color is completely removed. Step 3 Prepare a solution of 2 parts water to one part vinegar. Remove the clothing from the bleach solution, ring dry and place in the vinegar solution. Leave for 1/2 hour. Step 4 Remove the article of clothing from the vinegar solution and place in washer using cold water. The vinegar is used to stop the neutralize the bleaching process. Do not place in dryer. Step 5 Select your preferred dye colors, mix according to the manufacturer`s directions. If you are doing a tie dye, use rubber bands to tie fabric in the desired style and dye. Step 6 After fabric has been set in dye bath for the required time, rinse until water runs clean or place in washing machine on rinse cycle. Step 7 Hang dry and iron to set.
